Rukmini Devi Arundale was a trailblazer whose legacy continues to inspire generations. She played a transformative role in elevating Bharatanatyam from its temple origins and bringing it to the global stage, turning it into a respected and admired art form worldwide. Through her tireless efforts, she made Bharatanatyam not only a celebrated part of India’s cultural heritage but also a globally recognized symbol of artistic excellence.

In 1936, Rukmini Devi co-founded Kalakshetra, an institution dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Bharatanatyam and other traditional arts. Kalakshetra became a beacon for classical arts, offering a unique blend of rigorous training and artistic expression.

Rukmini Devi's contributions extended beyond dance. As a visionary leader, she became the first woman to be nominated to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament, where she championed numerous reforms, particularly in the fields of animal welfare and ethical living. Her leadership in the establishment of the Animal Welfare Board of India and her advocacy for cruelty-free practices helped shape the country's approach to compassion for animals. Additionally, her support for vegetarianism and sustainable living made her a global ambassador for humane living.
