A Pioneer in Cancer Care and a Champion of Affordable Treatment
Dr. Viswanathan Shanta, a distinguished oncologist, dedicated her life to making cancer care accessible and affordable for all. As the chairperson of the renowned Adyar Cancer Institute in Chennai, she spent over six decades in the field of oncology, pioneering research, treatment protocols, and public awareness campaigns to change the way cancer was perceived and treated in India. Her efforts not only revolutionized cancer care but also ensured that quality medical services reached the underserved populations.
Shanta's association with the Cancer Institute began in 1955, when the institute was just a modest 12-bed facility. Under her leadership, the Cancer Institute grew into one of India's foremost medical institutions, providing world-class cancer care to thousands of patients, many of whom received subsidized or free treatment.
Her work earned her numerous accolades, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2005, which she dedicated to the Cancer Institute for its service to the public. Additionally, she received the Padma Shri in 1986, the Padma Bhushan in 2006, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2016, India's second-highest civilian award, in recognition of her groundbreaking contributions to the field of oncology.
Throughout her illustrious career, Dr. Shanta also contributed to global health initiatives, serving on several national and international health committees, including the World Health Organization's Advisory Committee on Health.
